The gene Adenosine deaminase acting on RNA is referred to in FlyBase by the symbol Adar (CG12598, FBgn0026086). It has the cytological map location 2B9. Its sequence location is X:1667783..1678034. Its molecular function is described as: double-stranded RNA adenosine deaminase activity; double-stranded RNA binding. It is involved in the biological processes: response to hypoxia; adenosine to inosine editing; adult behavior; adult locomotory behavior; regulation of membrane potential; response to heat; locomotory behavior; mRNA modification; RNA processing. 25 alleles are reported. The phenotypes of these alleles are annotated with: adult central nervous system; medulla; lobula; lamina; wing; photoreceptor cell; adult brain; optic lobe; retina. It has 3 annotated transcripts and 3 annotated polypeptides.

Adults lacking Adar function are morphologically wild type, but show extreme behavioural deficits, including temperature-sensitive paralysis, locomotor uncoordination and tremors which increase in severity with age. Neurodegeneration accompanies the increase in phenotypic severity.
