The wun gene is involved in guiding germ cell migration.
wun is required for guidance of germ cell migration in early development. Loss of wun function disrupts the orientation of motion causing germ cells to disperse even though their normal target is well formed.
wun has two properties that allow it to use repulsion to guide the germ cells. wun can transform a permissive cellular environment into a repulsive one, and is expressed in the gut in a pattern that guides germ cells towards the mesoderm. Its sequence suggests that it is involved in lipid metabolism.
