The gene faint sausage is referred to in FlyBase by the symbol fas (CG17716, FBgn0000633). It has the cytological map location 50B6-50C3. Its sequence location is 2R:9510593..9636882. Its molecular function is unknown. It is involved in the biological processes: Malpighian tubule morphogenesis; dorsal closure; foregut morphogenesis; head involution; morphogenesis of an epithelium; salivary gland development; cardioblast cell fate determination; salivary gland morphogenesis; maintenance of polarity of embryonic epithelium. 18 alleles are reported. The phenotypes of these alleles are annotated with 22 unique terms, many of which group under: organ system; embryonic nervous system; embryonic neuron; nervous system; anatomical structure; primordium; embryonic head; ectoderm derivative; spiracle; commissure; midgut constriction. It has one annotated transcript and one annotated polypeptide.

fas has been cloned and sequenced.
fas mutants display disruption of the delamination of sensory neuronal precursors from the ectoderm. Sensory neurons appear in roughly normal numbers and position but are located in the epidermis.
fas is required for the migration of mesodermal precursor cells from the germ layer, their survival and/or terminal differentiation of all mesodermal precursors.
Internalisation of the salivary gland and salivary gland shape are altered in fas mutant embryos.
