Eye colour: brown. Eye colour: light brownish wine on emergence, darkening to garnet. Eye colour: white, with cn1. Eye colour: white, with st1. Eye colour: white, with v1.

Malpighian tubule colour: pale yellow. Testes colour: colourless.
Red pigments lacking. Xanthommatin mostly replaced by dihydroxanthommatin. Pigment granules present but somewhat smaller than in wild type.
Affects the formation of drosopterins and reduces level of ommochrome in the eye.
Male heterozygous and homozygous bw1 flies have an increased resistance to the anesthetic enflurane compared to wild-type controls, as judged by climbing ability. This effect is true whether enflurane resistance is measured in regular light or red light. bw1 male flies show no increased resistance to the anesthetic halothane compared to wild-type flies when climbing ability is measured in regular light. However, bw1 mutants show increased sensitivity to this anesthetic when climbing ability is measured in red light.

The increased resistance of bw1 homozygous males to enflurane is not enhanced or suppressed by st1/st1. bw1/+, st1/+ males from bw1, st1 homozygous mothers show increased resistance to halothane when tested under red light and a slight increase in this resistance when tested under white light. A maternal effect is necessary for this phenotype as it is not seen in bw1/+, st1/+ males from bw1, st1 homozygous fathers.
